The 3 Ways to Avoid Decay

  • The foundation of preventive dental care starts with good daily habits. Children should brush their teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, especially after breakfast and before bedtime. It's important to ensure they brush for a full two minutes, covering all surfaces of their teeth. Flossing should also be introduced early, as soon as two teeth are touching, to help remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gumline where a toothbrush can't reach.

  • Diet plays a crucial role in oral health. Children should consume a balanced diet that is low in sugar and starches, which can contribute to tooth decay. Encouraging children to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and calcium-rich foods like cheese and yogurt can help strengthen tooth enamel and support overall oral health. Additionally, it's important to limit snacking between meals and discourage the consumption of sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice that can lead to cavities.

  • Regular dental check-ups are essential for preventing dental issues. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that can't be eliminated by brushing alone. During these visits, the dentist can also apply preventive treatments such as fluoride and sealants to help protect the teeth from decay. Furthermore, these visits allow the dentist to monitor the child's dental development and catch potential problems early on when they are easier and less invasive to treat.
